Parents of newborn babies and those who are expecting a baby may be curious to know what a child’s first dental visit will entail. At Uptown Dental in Marion, the answer is simple: It will be brief, relaxed, and informative. Within your baby’s first year, you should make a dental appointment so we can check on your child’s tooth development and educate you on tooth and gum care. Here’s what you can expect at your child’s first dental visit.

Milestones for Baby’s Teeth

Most children have a tooth coming in by the time they are 8 months old. Some have a tooth erupt as young as 4 months, while others have delayed arrival of their first tooth that is as late as 15 months old. This is one of the major developmental milestones for babies. Parents should make an appointment when the first tooth erupts or by their first birthday.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Even if they haven’t been teething yet, your baby should be seen around the time they turn one year old. At your baby’s very first dental appointment, Dr. Lenz or Dr. Mueller and our caring staff will gently examine your baby’s mouth. Based on his or her development, we will answer any questions you have and review the care your baby’s teeth and gums require. We will share tips for teething, as that process continues through 2.5 to 3 years of age.

Oral Habits

Oral habits are among the issues we will address. Babies may learn to self soothe by sucking their thumb or lip. Some babies stop this as they grow and develop. Others continue thumb sucking through their toddler years. When permanent teeth come in, this habit can become an issue, as it can affect tooth alignment and possibly the palate. Parents can benefit by being aware of how this behavior can affect their child’s teeth. Learn more about thumb sucking from the Mayo Clinic.
