Parents’ Most Frequently Asked Dental Questions

Parents often have questions about their child’s oral health and dental development. Whether you’re having your first child or fourth, Uptown Dental has the answers to parents’ most frequently asked dental questions!

When should we schedule our child’s first dental appointment?

Babies are welcome to visit Uptown Dental at one year or when their first tooth comes in—whichever comes first. Visiting the dentist early will help your child get used to dental examinations. It will also help you as a parent understand the development of their teeth and get help caring for their teeth while they depend on you for the first 4 to 5 years of their life.

What happens at a child’s first dental appointment?

The first dental appointment for a child, usually at 8-12 months old, will provide a baseline to your child’s dental care and development. The dentist will examine the child’s mouth and document development of teeth. The first appointment also provides an opportunity to review your child’s oral habits, such as thumb sucking, with the dentist. The first visit is brief, but important in marking the milestone of the child’s first tooth and discussing how you will care for your baby’s teeth.

How do we brush my baby/toddler’s teeth?

Brushing a baby’s teeth can be kind of tricky, but if you start rubbing your baby’s gums with a warm, damp cloth after meals when they are tiny, they get used to the process. When teeth come in, it is important to start brushing the first tooth as soon as it is comfortable for the baby. A soft brush is all that is needed at first—no toothpaste is required. Having the child lay down allows you to access all areas of their mouth and helps you deal with a squirmy toddler. A quick brushing is all that is needed to start this healthy habit off in a positive manner. For more information, see:

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. Dental X-rays are one of the most effective diagnostic tools in the dental office, and they are safe. X-ray technology has advanced greatly, and the exposures are very fast and minimal. Plus, protective equipment shields your child from unnecessary exposure. Learn more about dental X-rays.

When should we think about aligners to straighten our kid’s teeth?

When to get aligners to straighten a child’s teeth depends on several factors. The typical age range for aligners is 9 to 14, however, older teens and even adults can also benefit from aligners. Aligners work best when the teeth and bite issues are mild to moderate. Talk to Dr. Lenz or Dr. Mueller about whether your child is a candidate for aligners and when aligners are recommended.
